Wizard's Play Network (WPN FAQ)

What is a WPN Retail Location?
A store is a public brick-and-mortar retail location that purchases product from a distributor or directly from Wizards of the Coast, and offers current Wizards product on-site for sale to customers. Locations that are not stores are not eligible for WPN levels.

How do I become a WPN Retail Location?
The Wizards of the Coast Sales site offers information on the requirements to be a retail location, and how stores can purchase Wizards product here.

What does my store get for its WPN level?
There are three levels for stores: Gateway, Core, and Advanced. Stores start out at Gateway level when they join the WPN. As the store’s player community grows and its activity increases, it gains access to even more WPN programs. You can see the store benefits and level requirements here.

How do I start getting events?
It’s never been easier for stores to get involved with events. The Wizards Play Network makes it easy to get your game going! If you haven’t already, sign your store up for the WPN at www.wizards.com/wpn. Once you’re a part of the WPN, you can sanction Magic and D&D events to get players coming back to your store. You also gain access to great WPN programs like D&D Encounters and Magic Leagues. As your store’s player community grows, you can raise your level in the WPN to access even more programs, like Magic prerelease tournaments.

How do I sanction events?
The best way to sanction events is to download Wizards Event Reporter (WER). You can use the WER to schedule your store’s regular recurring events so the results show up in your player’s global ratings. The program also shows you what WPN programs you can sanction. Just put in the date, format and location of your event. The event will show up automatically on our event locator for players to find!

How do I run and report events?
The Wizards Event Reporter (WER) also makes running and reporting events easy. Create a new event with the sanctioning number you received when you scheduled your event. Then put in the format and date information, the organizer and judge information, and enter the players into the tournament. (Make sure all your players have DCI numbers so the database knows who they are.) Once the event starts, the WER will do pairing, standings and playoffs (if any) automatically. All you need to do is enter the results! And when the event is over, the WER lets you upload the event immediately.

What if my events are too big to fit in my store? Can I run it elsewhere (like at the hotel next door)?
You can sponsor locations for WPN events that are too big to fit in your store. Your store will still receive credit for the activity in the sponsored location. The sponsored location must be a public venue. Some programs such as D&D Encounters are required to be run in your store, and cannot be held at a sponsored location. Check out the specific program details for more information.

How does my store deal with an organizer leaving? There is no one else here with event expertise, but the store still has the same events and WPN level.
Stores are responsible for the events they run through the WPN. They do not lose their WPN level or access to programs when the person who organizes their events leaves or moves. However, it’s the store’s responsibility to replace that expertise.

Certified DCI judges are the most knowledgeable experts on WPN program details and how to run events. You can find a judge near you to help you train up new organizers, or ask them if they can run events themselves! Wizards of the Coast also offers many other resources to help stores find organizing expertise. Contact 1-800-324-6496 for help.
